You know those episodes of Sex in the City when its a warm crisp summer NY night outside and Carry sits at her window pondering the day's events in preparation for her next article? Well, I kind of am having one of those moments. (insert blogging picture here). My room at 5 Elements Hostel on Moselstr (Room 505) is on the 5th floor in the back of the building and from my window I can see all the skycrapers of Frankfurt, feel the warm summer air come into my room, and hear the late night hustle and bustle of a city that will soon go to sleep (I hope at least). It's 1:40a and I am not at all tired - considering its only 4:40p at home.
It's been a great day. I think I walked over 10 miles today - which is easy to do in a city that easily moves you from the red light district, to a market square, to the edge of the Main River, to old Cathedrals and historic squares. Frankfurt is beautiful! Most of the city was destroyed during WWII and was reconstructed with very tall modern skyscrapers. The city skyline is a sight to see specially from the Main River - it is nicknamed Frankfurt Main-Hattan. There are still some old architecture that has been preserved which makes for a great constrast against all the tall concrete/glass in the background.
It was really hot and muggy today. My walk took me along the Main River Bank, Romenber/Romer Square (which was mostly closed off as they prepared for an Iron Man event coming up on Sunday), Archeological Gardens, Untermian Brucke Bridge, Kaiserdom (Emperor's Cathedral), Saalgassee, Zeil Shopping Center, Hauptwache, and the "Bermuda Triangle" (the City's Gayborhood). The best thing about it all was that I just went for a walk, no map or sense of direction, took all these pictures, came back to the room and asked for a city guide and all of the sudden I was able to place a name with all that I had seen.
Patriotism is very visible here - there are German flags everywhere: Balconies, cars, bicycles, boats, and even the hookers on the main drag of the Red Light district are wearing Black, Yellow(or is it orange), and red boas. I would say its mostly due to Germany still being in the world cup since no question in doubt it is a huge sporting event here. Today, every business along Kaiser Street (yes Mattie, that is the major drag in Frankfurt) had any and every tv out on the street so people could watch the games.
I wanted to go dancing tonight but it was really dead out - one of the guys working the club told me that it's because its Koln (Cologne)Gay Pride this weekend. Lucky for me, I have a train ticket for Cologne tomorrow all day! Not only will it be pride but Germany will play Argentina in the world cup - sensory overload perhaps!?!? yaaaaa!
Time to try and call it a night for now!
